IATA: AVIATION GENERATES $29.7 BILLIONS FOR GREECE ECONOMY

A new report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows just how important aviation is to Greece. The industry adds USD 29.7 billion to the country’s economy—about 12.5% of Greece’s GDP—and supports nearly 500,000 jobs.

Aviation directly employs 37,100 people and creates USD 3.5 billion in economic activity. But when indirect and tourism-related jobs are included, the total rises to 487,400 jobs nationwide.

Tourism drives much of this growth. Visitors who fly to Greece contribute USD 20.9 billion to the economy and support 370,900 jobs. International air travelers spend about USD 24.1 billion in Greece each year, showing how valuable air connectivity is for local businesses.

Greece’s air network is also expanding fast. The country now has 39 airports with scheduled flights, offering connections to 208 destinations in 57 countries. Every day, around 429 international flights depart Greece, operated by 251 airlines.

Since 2014, Greece’s international air connectivity has increased 90% within Europe and 301% with the rest of the world. In 2023, 75% of all flights from Greece were international, with 25.3 million passengers traveling abroad. Europe remains the top market, with London, Paris, and Tel Aviv among the most popular destinations.

Aviation supports more than tourism. Greek airports handled 100,900 tonnes of cargo in 2023, helping trade flow in and out of the country. Air travel is also becoming more accessible—the average Greek needs 2.5 days of work to afford a plane ticket.

The report highlights aviation’s social and economic benefits, including its role in supporting several UN Sustainable Development Goals by improving access and connecting communities.

IATA’s Robert Chad summed it up: “Let’s build a future where aviation remains a force for growth – without leaving a negative footprint.”

Aviation remains a key pillar of Greece’s economy—and a major driver of its future growth.
